Reforestation projects
Because of extensive deforestation around El Corozal hardly woods to find. This leads to more problems. Timber and palm leaves (for roofing) are hardly available. Not long ago, most villagers were still a piece of wood and wood and palm leaves richly stocked. Building a house took almost alone labor. Now the natural building materials became so scarce that it is often cheaper to bricks and corrugated iron instead of wood and palm leaves. Many people do not have the funds to buy construction materials. Firewood is now also becoming scarce and this is something used every day.
Guacamaya The Foundation helps set up reforestation projects in particular children are involved. They are helped to a small piece of ground (parents) to be planted with different trees, palms and bamboo. After several years firewood can be harvested after 5-6 years bamboo and palm leaves. After 8-10 years can also be harvested lumber. Meanwhile, the forest also produces nuts and fruits. The children not only helped with trees and bamboo plants, but are also supported in maintaining their own forest. In addition, they learn about the various uses such as bamboo. So they learn not only how objects can make use of bamboo, such as baskets, but also how your furniture and even a house can make bamboo. The children can later use these skills for personal use such a bed of bamboo, but they can also start selling products from bamboo.
The children are thus enabled to a better future for themselves to plant. Now as a child by a forest plants get it later when they are founding their own family, again offered a forest that provides them the materials for a house and furniture, and where they can harvest fruits and nuts. The sale of forest products can give them a sustainable income. The project is offered in collaboration with some local schools. Guacamaya The Foundation collaborates with educators at an educational program on the value of the forest and the potential of reforestation. Participating schools will also have access to a multifunctional building of bamboo. This building has an open dining area (which can also be used as a classroom), a kitchen with a wood-saving stove, a small store and an ecological laundry. The schools have few facilities and the building of bamboo is a significant improvement in school facilities. Simultaneously, there is an important example because the students and their parents can see what you can do with bamboo. Around the building is also a minibos planted around the school a greener look to give the children while learning about the various uses of the forest. Met planting the bos, the children not only improves future, but there also arises tegelijkertijd greater habitat for extinction to endangered Howler de Guatemala and the Central American slinge bluntly.
