Excursions
Mayan children are barely out of their village, and have little access to newspapers and television, the world they know is very small. Guacamaya The Foundation organizes excursions to Mayan children including museums, ancient Mayan ruins and nature reserves. An example of a very successful tour was a school trip to Lake Atitlan.
Children from a nearby coffee plantation were included in a bus and first visited Santiago Atitlan, a traditional Mayan village where most people still wear traditional costume. From Santiago Atitlan made the children a boat on the lake (for most children their first cruise) and they watched birds. On a deserted beach she listened to a radio play about the tragic story of the Atitlanfuut, the only endemic bird of Guatemala, which is now extinct. Then the children went swimming and picnicking. The aim of the school trips, the children to broaden the horizon and the knowledge and appreciation for their natural and cultural wealth to increase, and they also give lots of fun.
